Gentoo Linux
I previously ran Gentoo Linux on my Dell Inspiron - that page is now available here.
Ubuntu
In October 2006 I switched to Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake). Not much to report on getting Ubuntu running, as almost everything just worked straight out of the box. The exceptions?
- I haven't tried the HFS softmodem yet.
- I had to add these lines to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (in
the "Monitor" section) before I could run any resolution higher than
640x480:
HorizSync 31.5-48.5
VertRefresh 59-75 - Out of the box, software suspend doesn't work. I haven't put much time into figuring out why - I never had it working in Gentoo either.
I haven't compiled my own kernel yet, and don't know if I will - for now I'm happy enough with the default Ubuntu kernel.
